Split Earlobe Surgery
PROCEDURE DETAILS

How is split ear lobe correction carried out?

The procedure

Repair of an ear lobe is a minor procedure that is done under local anesthesia. It involves trimming away the skin that has healed within the split, and then suturing the two sides back together to give a symmetric and pleasing appearance.

We would recommend a period of several months before re-piercing your ear following the procedure to ensure the ear has healed fully.

Procedure Highlights:

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Quick procedure (approx. 30 minutes)
  • Minimal discomfort and downtime
  • Natural-looking results

What to expect

The surgery is pain free and performed under local anaesthetic. Following the reconstruction, the wound is closed with sutures and a dressing is applied.

You will be provided with expert aftercare advice from our friendly team who will explain how to care for your wound.

As with any other surgical procedure, there is a slight risk of discomfort. Other risks or complications that may occur include bleeding, bruising, infection, wound healing problems and deformity, although these are rare.

Split Earlobe Repair FAQ's

Common questions about split earlobe repair answered by our expert surgeons

How painful is earlobe repair surgery?

Because earlobe repair is so minor, there is very little discomfort or downtime after. You can control any pain with the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever and get right back to your normal activities. Scarring from earlobe repair is usually very minimal.

How long does ear lobe repair surgery take?

Earlobe repair surgery is one of the least invasive surgeries performed. Like any surgery that may leave you nervous, this surgery is done in a matter of 30 minutes and performed under a local anesthetic so you won't feel any pain.

Is a split earlobe an emergency?

If your earlobes are severely stretched or split, you'll need to seek medical care if you want to restore their form and function. Though stretched or split earlobes that result from earring use (not injury) aren't considered an emergency, they still require the attention of an experienced plastic surgeon.

Can I shower after earlobe surgery?

In most cases of isolated earlobe repair, antibiotics and pain medication are not needed afterwards. After two days, it is perfectly fine to get the ears wet during showering or washing. That does not increase the risk of infections.

When can I wear earrings again after repair?

We recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks before having your ears re-pierced after split earlobe repair. This allows the tissue to heal completely and ensures the best possible results for your new piercings.

What causes split earlobes?

Split earlobes most commonly occur from wearing heavy earrings over time, trauma from earrings being pulled, or from ear gauges/stretching. Sometimes they can also result from infections or other medical conditions.
